Graphics Software
One of the most common needs of a student is to develop original graphics
for a web-site, presentation, title page, etc. Here are some open source
alternatives to high priced graphics software.
 The Gimp
Gimp stands for The GNU Image Manipulation Program. Gimp is
comparable in functionality to some of the most advanced image processing
applications out there. With advanced filters and scripts, students
can create almost any graphic their imaginations can conjure.
 PovRay
PovRay stands for Persistence of Vision Ray-Tracing. Put simply
it is a programming environment for 3-D rendered graphics. I use Povray as
a first programming assignment for INFO1080, but I have also had students
elect to use Povray for graphics modules instead.
